I have just returned from a very successful and rewarding trip to London, and am ready to infuse some new ideas into our offering for American men. There is no doubt we could take some pages from the Brits when it comes to dressing to impress. My time in London was spent with some of London's top tailoring professionals, and has inspired me to bring a few elements of classic sleek refinement we could all stand to embrace a bit more.


Today, some tailors are still influenced by the Italian 1990's style made popular by Armani, Versace, Canali and others. The older style suits can be very comfortable to wear, but in the end not really flattering. The bigger and more roomy style can make a big man look bigger; can make a smaller or average size man look swallowed up in his suit; or give any man the look of being able to carry spare luggage in his drawers.

If you have a suit made today, we hope you'll allow us to introduce the new American style - modern, sleek, fitted and comfortable. The updated suit jacket or sport coat has a small and natural shoulder, capped or roped slightly, nothing exaggerated. The prevalent style is a bit more trim in the chest and back with a nice easy fitting and higher armhole with trimmer lapels. A higher gorge and notch and the capped shoulder finish the top of the frame. Below the waist, a more natural and slightly less baggy, less high waisted pant finish off the look. A single pleat or flat front style are the way to design these, with a slight break riding nicely atop the shoe. The difference between Full-Canvas suits and Fused Suits

From department store sales people to many of the top mens magazines, full canvas suits are constantly regarded as the best around. Touted for their craftsmanship, classic fit and ability to hold up over long periods of time the full canvas suit is the class in mens tailored wear. What is the real difference between a full canvas suit and their lesser regarded counter part the fused suit? Does it really make that much of a difference and most of all, is the extra added cost worth it in the long run?



The Full Canvas Suit

What is it? Its a term thrown around but really very few know what it really means but it can mean the difference between a marginally made suit and one that is made of the utmost quality. A full canvas suit is one where the interior lining, also known as the interlining (invisible to the wearer) is hand basted-lightly sewn- to the face of the suit. This canvas is what gives the suit its shape and body. For decades this was the only way to make a suit jacket. The light basting allows the canvas to move and flex with its wearer. It is time consuming but when done properly the suit jacket will drape and move effortlessly.



The Fused Suit 

Fused suits came about due to mass production. It was too time consuming and expensive to hand baste canvas so as a solution they would heat press a layer of synthetic material to the face of the jacket. Replacing the canvas with fusing saved hours of hand labor and cost on natural and relatively expensive canvas. the result was a suit that seemed to have the same properties as a full canvas suit yet with a lower cost to produce.



What is the difference

Initially the difference is negligible. To the untrained eye a fused suit moves and looks the same, yet to this day the top men’s suits are still made with canvas interlinings. The reason for this is what happens after the break in. Canvas suits will remain stiff on parts that do not move while in “stress points” it will break in and be more ply-able. this is what gives it a feel and look like it moves with its wearer. Over time it also tends to hold up better as the basting stitches stand up to dry cleaning and pressing while the glued fused suits will wear out resulting in de-lamination.

Urban Meyer Sightings

JT Vinson is again the official clothier of Urban Meyer and the Urban Meyer coach's show. Here are two recent events and you can see Coach Meyer wearing his favorite J.T. Vinson orange and blue ties at SEC media days. He's sporting a 3 button Black-solid Super 150's custom suit designed and made by JT Vinson. I explained to him that this is your "do-everything" power suit! If you ask me Urban looks better than that other guy!

Here he is also wearing the tie, (which is a copy of the tie that Billy Donovan wore when the Gators won their first ever National Championship game) while walking with Barack Obama. I gave both Gator coaches the tie as a gift, and I'm so glad to see Urban broke it out for something as important as a trip to the Whitehouse, as Billy did for his first National Championship appearance. I like seeing my clothes in high places!! Naturally, when a man is going to meet the President of the United States he ought to be wearing great clothes. What else but JT Vinson custom!

Since both coaches intend on winning more championships, I'm busy figuring out what they should wear. Stay tuned!

Question: How do I stop my dress shirt collars from getting too tight?

Answer:
A number of factors influence collar size and can make a collar uncomfortably snug. First, be sure you are buying the correct collar size. As professionals, we take your measurements to ensure you will be comfortable around the collar when buttoned-up.

Secondly, remember that it only takes a 4-7 lb. weight fluctuation to cause your collars to become a pain in the neck.

All natural fiber shirting, especially 100% cotton, will always shrink after the first laundering. Custom shirt makers know this and cut shirts larger to compensate. After just a few launderings, the collar will settle into the correct size and fit perfectly.

Laundering in excessively hot water, failure to tumble dry a shirt, and pressing with extreme heat, can also cause unwanted shrinkage and may even affect the construction materials that bond the top collar to the shirt, resulting in permanent damage and creases in the collar.

Closet Organization

The 80/20 Rule is alive and well in most people's closets. According to organizational expert Peter Walsh, we wear 20 percent of our clothes 80 percent of the time. Further, we often tend to buy the same things over and over again.

It's perfectly fine to lock into our fashion favorites and keep those items well stocked in our wardrobes. Walsh suggests hanging similar items together so you know exactly what you have on hand in your working wardrobe.

It's a good thing to periodically sort through your clothes and separate them into "keep" and "donate" piles. If you haven't worn an item in the last 6-12 months, the likelihood is that you never will.

After purging the closet, which often results in a closet that feels more spacious and uncluttered, try ridding the closet of wire hangers and upgrading to nicer wooden hangers, all of which match for an organized, coordinating look.

Now, start out with all the hangers hung in the reverse direction. Test the 80/20 Rule yourself. Since you wear 20 percent of your clothes 80 percent of the time, for the next six months, whenever you wear an article of clothing and hang it back in the closet, hang it the correct way. After six months, if you have items that are still hanging backwards in your closet, ask yourself, "Am I ever going to wear it again?"

If it can be altered or repaired, have it done. If not, donate it and replace it with more functional pieces in your working wardrobe.

How many suits should I have?

The answer to this question depends of course on how often a person wears a suit, however there is a pretty good rule of thumb to follow also. Most any professional clothier would suggest that a gentleman have a minimum of a two to three week rotation of suits. What does that mean? That means that during your busiest time of year, you could function as you normally would without having to wear the same suit more than once every two to three weeks - i.e. three days a week in a suit = no less than 6-9 suits at the ready. Keeping a 3 week rotation of suits is no easy task, and is even tougher if one is subject to weight fluctuations since we tend to over-wear the clothes we have that fit best.

Chamber Leadership trip to China

Last week I was in China with the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce for the International Leadership trip. It was extremely positive 10 day trip from March 7th - 17th. We travelled with a 35 person delegation including the Mayor of Jacksonville, and were treated like absolute royalty while we were there!! I especially gained a great deal of knowledge from the trip in as well as some connections there that could prove invaluable to me in the clothing business, not to mention 34 great new friends! China is very impressive with some of the most massive cities I have ever seen. We visited Beijing, where this Summer's Olympics will be held, and climbed the Great Wall of China. We then spent three days in Shanghai where the size and scope of the city boggles the mind. You can buy anything you want in Shanghai, and it is manufactured right there. We then visited Hong Kong for three days and I must say it is the most beautiful and efficient city I have ever seen. I spent some time with a few of the famous Hong Kong Tailors, and learned quite a bit while I was there. Hats off to the Chamber here in Jacksonville for creating one of the most memorable trips I have ever had, and one that promises to pay great dividends for me (and my clients), and an experience I will never forget! - AMV
